English captain Eoin Morgan, who helped the team get their hands on their first-ever 50-over World Cup, may retire soon. According to a report by the Guardian, the middle-order batter is likely to announce his retirement from international cricket this week. Jos Buttler is expected to take over the white-ball captaincy duties in case Morgan retires.
The 35-year-old Irishman has not been at his best with the bat, raising many doubts. He had two ducks in his last two games for England. He has only two fifties in his previous 28 international games. "If I don’t think I am good enough or I don’t feel I am contributing to the team, then I will finish," Morgan had told Sky Sports ahead of the Netherlands series.
It is to be noted that he found no bidders during the Indian T20 League 2022 mega auction. Addressing why that may be, Morgan got candid while giving an interview to The Evening Standard.
"It’s a fact that I haven’t scored enough runs. I am viewing it as a challenge … I will be using this break to recharge, but also to work on things that you don’t have time to work on during competition … thought my best chance was to be picked up in the second round once squads had been put together if someone needed help as a reserve middle order, experienced player, captain, whatever. But by the time the first round finished, pretty much every team had boxed that off, so I had no chance," he said.
Eoin Morgan over the years
Morgan succeeded Alastair Cook as England's captain just before the 2015 ODI World Cup. Since then, he turned around the fortunes for England in white-ball cricket. Although the 2015 WC was a failure for the team, the 2019 edition made up for it. He became the first captain to guide England to an ODI WC win.
Morgan has scored over 7700 runs in 248 ODI appearances, while he has scored 2458 runs in 115 T20I matches. He made his debut for England in 2006.
