Former England skipper Alastair Cook stated that the current England team could not handle the pressure of Test cricket. Cook's remarks came after Joe Root and the team suffered a humiliating series loss against New Zealand at Edgbaston on Sunday. The Kiwis won a two-match contest 1-0. They took just 11 overs and 52 minutes of playing time on the fourth day. The visitors won the match by eight wickets in the second Test after being set a meager target of 38 runs. Sunday's defeat, which followed a draw at Lord's, meant that the England cricket team had lost a home Test series for the first time since 2014.

In the second innings of the last Test, none of the England batsmen managed to score more than 30 runs after scoring 388 runs in the first innings. Joe Root and the team eventually lost the game and series as well to New Zealand. The England cricket team was in the game for the first two days, but then a batting collapse turned the game in favor of New Zealand. By the end of the third day, England had already lost 9 wickets. New Zealand premium pacer Trent Boult took no time to take the last wicket of Olly stone on the very first ball of day 4. The entire England team was dismissed for 122 runs.

Legendary opening batsman Alastair Cook accused England's top-order of lacking the temperament that is required for Test cricket. He stated that this could be a huge concern as they are to face Australia in six months for the Ashes series. The form of batsmen Dom Sibley, Zak Crawley, and Ollie Pope still remains a concern for Alastair Cook. Talking about Alastair Cook, the legendary batsman retired from Test duty in 2018 as England's leading scorer with 12,472 runs at 45.35, including 33 hundred. Meanwhile, Joe Root and the team now have five Test matches against India to improve their batting attack before flying Down Under in November.

During the series against New Zealand, England was already without the services of injured Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer. Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes, Jonny Bairstow, and Moeen Ali were rested from this series after their return from the Indian Premier League.
