Dambulla Aura continued their dominance in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023 with four straight wins and ensured themselves a top-two finish. They have registered a comprehensive 50-run victory against Colombo Strikers in Match No.16 on Saturday, August 12. at the R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Chasing 167 runs, Strikers struggled right from the start and towards the end, it was all about whether Dambulla would bowl out their opponent or not.

Opting to bat first, Aura got off to a disastrous start as they were reduced to 46-4 in 6.5 overs. When they were in deep trouble, a 102-run partnership between Ben McDermott and Alex Ross helped them to get back on track. McDermott scored 69 with four fours and as many sixes, while Ross contributed 52 runs with five fours and two sixes to set Strikers a competitive target.

Strikers went nowhere in the chase

In reply, the Aura bowlers tightened the screws early on despite a strong start from opener Pathum Nissanka and Niroshan Dickwella. A couple of loose shots from Nissanka and Babar Azam triggered a batting collapse, from which they were unable to recover. Pakistan internationals Iftikhar Ahmed and Mohammad Nawaz had no answers to Noor Ahmad and Dushan Hemantha's spin attacks.

Strikers failed to get a single boundary after the 13th over and it was just a formality for the Aura bowlers to register a convincing victory for the team. A good all-round bowling effort helped Aura bowl out their opponents for 116 runs in 19.4 overs. The Pakistani speedster Hasan Ali deserves a special mention as he finished with figures of 4-0-16-3. Nuwanidu Fernando, who scored 21 runs off 20 balls, was the top-scorer for Strikers.

The 50-run defeat left Strikers in dire straits as they went to the bottom of the table with four points and a poor net run rate of -0.864. With just two games to go, their chances of a top-four finish are slim now. Aura, on the other hand, will now play in Qualifier 1 at the R Premadasa Stadium on Thursday, August 17.
