The Women’s Indian T20 League is going to happen for the first time in 2023. The league already made headlines when the Indian Cricket Board earned Rs. 4,669.99 crores for the sale of five teams. The Board sold the media rights of this league to Viacom18 for Rs. 951 crores, Rs. 7.09 crore per match value for five years.
Regarding that, Jay Shah tweeted: “Today is a historic day in cricket as the bidding for teams of inaugural #WPL broke the records of the inaugural Men’s Indian T20 League in 2008! Congratulations to the winners as we garnered ₹4,669.99 Cr in total bid.” However, there were reports that players like Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj can come out of retirement to play in the tournament.
“I’m keeping that option open. I’ve not yet decided.” - Mithali Raj said earlier on her chances of playing in the Women’s Indian T20 League
Regarding that, Mithali Raj said: “I’m keeping that option open. I’ve not yet decided. There are a few more months to go before the women’s Indian T20 League happens. It would be lovely to be part of the first edition of the Women’s T20 League.” But, now as per reports to News18, the former India skipper is going to join with Gujarat franchise as a mentor, not as a player. A source close to the developments said: “Mithali Raj was keen to play but she is now all set to mentor the Gujarat team for the inaugural Women’s Premier League.”
“Yes there was interest from her side to play, particularly for the team based out of Mumbai but things didn’t quite materialise the way she would have wanted and a lucrative role with the Gujarat team came her way. It’s always good to have the presence of someone like Mithali in the camp. The vast experience across formats will only benefit the team she is going to be a part of,” the source concluded.
Here is how fans have reacted to the news of Mithali Raj joining the Gujarat franchise as a mentor:
