FIFA World Cup 2022, Match 24, Group C: Lionel Messi rises to the occasion as Argentina defeat Mexico 2-0

In the ongoing FIFA World Cup, Argentina took on Mexico in their second match of the tournament on 27 November. It was a Group C encounter which took place in Lusail Stadium. In the opening fixture, Lionel Messi failed to guide his team to victory. Saudi Arabia shocked everyone by defeating them with a scoreline of 2-1.

While Mexico managed a goalless draw against Poland, thanks to their goalkeeper Ochoa. He saved a penalty from Robert Lewandowski. Therefore, it was a must-win clash for Argentina while Mexico were looking for their first win in this tournament. Fans were hoping to Lionel Messin in top form this time around.

Speaking of the match, Mexico got a free kick in the 11th minute. Luis Chavez put a free-kick and Hector Herrera managed to touch the ball. The ball ended wide of the far post. In the 43rd minute, Argentina’s Gonzalo Montiel committed a foul and received a yellow card. Therefore, Mexico got awarded a free kick.

In the 45th minute, Alexis Vega stepped up and produced an inch-perfect free-kick over the wall. But, Argentina keeper Emiliano Martinez was equal to the task as he save it while fully stretching. Therefore, the first half of the game ended 0-0. In the second half, both teams started evenly. But, in the 64th minute, Lionel Messi produced magic as he scored a screamer from 25 yards out. From the outside of the box, Lionel Messi opened the scoring for Argentina. Angel Di Maria came up with the assist in that goal.

It was Messi's eighth goal in FIFA World Cups for his country. Then, Enzo Fernandez hit the second goal for Argentina and Messi came up with an assist. They managed to hold the lead till the final whistle and thus, Argentina defeated Mexico by 2-0 in the World Cup. This win kept them alive in the tournament as one more match to go in the group stage.
