Recently, it was reported that Australia's limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch might take a call on his ODI career. There is a reasonable explanation reason for something like this to happen. In the 13 ODIs the right-hander played this year, he averages only as many and has 169 runs to his name. In the recent series against Zimbabwe, he struggled against one particular bowler, Richard Ngarava.
During that series, the two-time World Cup winner could only score 21 runs in three games. His misery with the bat has continued in the ongoing series against New Zealand. In the two games played so far, he has scored only five runs. If the reports are true, then the team will need to have a look at a new captain.
Five players who can be the next captain for Australia in ODIs
-
Steven Smith
The right-hander led the team before from 2015 to 2018 after the retirement of Michael Clarke. In the 51 ODIs, he led the team, the teams won 25 and lost 23 which can be termed a 'decent' record. His captaincy ended across formats after the sandpaper gate.
Now, he is currently the vice-captain of the Test side to Pat Cummins. Given his experience, the two-time World Cup winner can be a best candidate for the job.
2. Glenn Maxwell
The 'Big Show' hasn't led the team across formats. However, he has led Punjab in the Indian T20 League 2017 and has been leading Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League over the years. He has done alright as a captain.
The right-hander explosive batter might be a good candidate to lead the team. He might bring an aggressive style of play to the team in ODIs which they are missing in recent times.
3. Alex Carey
The wicket-keeper batter has a decent record in ODI cricket as a number seven batter. In the 20 games he batted at the critical position, he has scored 551 runs at an average of 42.38, which is better than his career average (35.31).
Notably, he has led the team in three games, all in 2021. In those games, he scored 112 runs at an average of 37.33. Not to forget, a wicketkeeper by the name of MS Dhoni also turned out to be one of the most successful skippers.
4. Pat Cummins
The pacer is already leading the team in the Test format. Since taking over the captaincy, the team hasn't lost a series. In fact, they won in Pakistan and drew in Sri Lanka which wasn't done by an Australian team for a long time.
Notably, he hasn't let the leadership pressure affect his game. Also, he has broken the taboo of 'pacers shouldn't be leading a team' myth in the nine months.
5. David Warner
There was a time in Australian cricket when he was the vice-captain to Steve Smith across formats. However, the sandpaper gate impacted their leadership careers. Not to forget, he has been banned from leading the national side.
However, this ban can be removed by Cricket Australia. Also, his leadership skills weren't bad. Ask the Hyderabad franchise fans from the Indian T20 League. If CA decided to remove his ban, he can be the next skipper of the team.
