The Delhi team has seen some major transformation over the past few years in the Indian T20 League. They rebranded themselves and their ideology has seen a lot of change since then. They have backed their young talent to take on the biggest teams in the competition. Delhi was also able to reach their first-ever final under a young captain Shreyas Iyer in 2020. They reached the play-off in 2021 as well. Here are some of the reasons why Delhi can reach the final again and this time win their maiden ITL title.
Rishabh Pant- Ricky Ponting duo
Not many expected Rishabh Pant to be a good leader when he was appointed as the captain mid-way in 2021. However, he proved everyone wrong. He had a very successful run, leading the team to the playoffs. Pant is a good learner and Ponting by his side, Delhi can be very dangerous in terms of game strategies
Young players as their core
The Delhi team has made sure that the young guns remain the core of their squad. They retained Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw, and Anrich Nortje before the mega auction, which shows their trust in them. All these players are proven match-winners for them. They have been consistent as well. This time around, Delhi has some more younger players that are equally capable of winning matches. They will look forward to playing them in their team.
Solid opening pair
Prithvi Shaw and David Warner will be the new opening pair for Delhi this season. They provide a good left-hand right-hand combination, which is very important for a batting unit. These two will be happy to cruise through the innings as the wickets in Maharashtra are not very tricky to bat on. Prithvi Shaw has had a good experience batting with Shikhar Dhawan in the past few years and David Warner has a similar batting style. The two can get along well.
The Delhi team has managed to get a good set of overseas players for the 2022 season. They have a good variety in different categories and also have a few backups. The four overseas players that may get a chance to start in the playing XI for Delhi are David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Anrich Nortje, and Rovman Powell. All these bring different skill sets in the playing XI and can contribute to the team’s win.
Fast bowling lineup
Having retained Anrich Nortje, Delhi had to look for another primary fast bowler. They found that in Shardul Thakur, who will be their other fast bowler. Nortje has been able to trouble the batters with his extra pace in the last two seasons, which he would want to replicate this time as well. Thakur has established a reputation as a partnership breaker, which is true. He will be vital for the team. Apart from these two, Delhi has Mustafizur Rahman, Chetan Sakariya, and Lungi Ngidi among others in their lineup.
