Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano faced racial abuse after his team’s loss against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the ongoing Bundesliga 2023-24. It all happened after Upamecano conceded a penalty in the 67th minute of the match and he had to leave the field after he was booked by the referee and given a red card.

This red card for Upamecano will keep him away from the next leg of the tournament, which is set to be played in Munich on March 5. In the same line of events, the 25-year-old was also subjected to racial abuse on social media after Bayern Munich lost the match.

Furthermore, Bayern Munich took a firm stand for their defender and came up with a strong stance in a post from their official X handle (formerly Twitter).

“FC Bayern strongly condemn the racist comments being directed towards Dayot Upamecano on social media,” reads the tweet shared by Bayern Munich.

“Anyone who comments hateful words such as these is no fan of our club. We’re all behind you, Upa!” the tweet added further.

Speaking about the match, it was not a good day on the field for Bayern Munich as they failed to score even a single goal in the entire match. Xabi Alonso’s Bayer 04 completely dominated the match from the initial phase of the match to the last minute of the contest.

For Bayer 04, Stanisic scored the first goal in the 18th minute of the match to register a lead for his side by 1-0, maintained until the end of the first half. Within a few minutes after the start of the second half, Grimaldo scored the second goal for his side in the 50th minute to take his team’s lead to 2-0. Eventually, the final nail in the coffin for Bayern Munich was Frimpong’s goal in the 90th minute of the match.
