Cheteshwar Pujara is prepared to make his comeback in the IPL after a long gap of 7 years. The veteran was exepected to go unsold once again in the IPL 2021 auction, but CSK added him to their squad for his base price of INR 50 lakh. He defined the moment as an emotional one, adding that he was overwhelmed by the thought of playing under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, who was also his captain when he made his international debut. The Gujarat-born batsman feels that he has landed in the right IPL team. Pujara deems that he will get many people to guide him through the course of the league.
For several years, Pujara struggled to get buyers at the IPL auction. Many IPL franchises have been doubtful of his abilities as a T20 player because of his extremely defensive approach in the red-ball format. However, the 33-year-old batsman is out to prove that he can be successful in white-ball cricket too.
I would have become a better cricketer in the shortest format with more opportunities: Cheteshwar Pujara
CSK boss N Srinivasan stated that he could not have let Pujara unsold as he after his brilliant performance in Australia. What makes this feeling of playing in the IPL even more special for Pujara is that he will be playing under MS Dhoni.
Cheteshwar Pujara, who has featured in 30 IPL games, accepted that many people consider him unfit for the white-ball formats because of his specialization in the game's most extended format. Pujara played his last IPL game for Punjab Kings against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, in 2014. In IPL, Pujara has an aggregate of 390 runs with just one half-century.
The Chennai-based franchise is currently training in Mumbai where they are going to play their first five matches of the season. The entire team trained in Chennai from March 8 before checking in to their hotel for the mandatory 7-day quarantine ahead of the tournament. They will play their first match against Delhi Capitals on April 10.
