In a recent interview, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment President David Haddad revealed that Hogwarts Legacy had sold over 22 million copies last year. This makes the game one of the bestsellers despite not being able to win any major awards.
It should not come as a surprise as the game peaked at over 800,000 players on Steam only. Hogwarts Legacy was also able to surpass popular games like Call of Duty, which usually takes the bag every year.
“Dethroning Call of Duty is a huge feat, especially for a single-player game. That's a position that typically is held by one of these incumbent's sequel games, and we're so proud that we've been able to break into the top ranks,” Haddad said
“It was also the best-selling game in the entire gaming industry worldwide. But it's not just the unit sold that I'm so proud of, it's just that it delighted the fans so much. It brought Harry Potter to life in a new way for gamers where they could be themselves in this world, in this story,” he added.
More games are on their way
Given the success of the first game in Potterverse, it is quite clear that Warner Bros. will be making more games. While not directly a sequel, there is much more to explore in the Harry Potter universe.
Talking further about expanding into the Harry Potter universe, Haddad said that more games are planned for the future. While he did not go into details, however, he did say they are working to give players the best experience.
While the initial release saw some bugs and performance issues, they were quickly addressed by the developers. The game also saw some controversy over J. K. Rowling. However, when the dust settled, what remained was a fun, open-world fantasy adventure game.
