MS Dhoni didn't spend his best moments in the IPL 2020. Chennai Super Kings is out of the playoffs for the first time in IPL history. They lost eight games out of 12 and are at the eighth spot in the points table. Despite a forgettable season, Gautam Gambhir feels that CSK management won't sack MS Dhoni as the captain. He feels that the team and the management will stick to MSD as the captain for the next season as well.

MS Dhoni has faced a lot of criticism for his unpredictability in choices and picking non-performing cricketers also. One of the causes of the team’s underperformances was the absence of an acceleration in the powerplay overs. The fielders of CSK likewise dropped some crucial catches, particularly against the Delhi Capitals, adding to their defeats.

Gautam Gambhir was asked about his view on the future leadership of Chennai Super Kings. He underlined that the decision lies in the franchise.  Gambhir pointed out the mutual respect between the franchise and MS Dhoni. No doubt, Dhoni has led his team to incomparable heights. Gambhir feels that it is how all the franchise owner should deal with a skipper, who has done a lot for his side.

“You’re putting me in a fix. Now that’s a tough question. It up to the franchise. What he has done for the franchise and how the franchise deals with MS and treats MS is a fabulous relationship. And that is how every franchise should deal with their captain, who has delivered for them,” Gambhir told ESPN Cricinfo.

Gambhir feels Dhoni might have gone through many sleepless nights

The former Indian opener further underlined that the keeper-batsman of Chennai Super King won them three IPL prizes, several Champions League tournaments. He also made his team the best IPL side after Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians. He referred to the mutual respect behind MS Dhoni's loyalty, sweat, heart, and soul to the franchise. According to Gambhir, the 39-year old may have gone through numerous sleepless nights during the ongoing IPL season after the poor performance of his side. Throughout his IPL 2020 campaign, Dhoni was under tremendous pressure.

“MS has won them three trophies, couple of Champions Leagues, he has made them one of the top successful sides in the IPL after Mumbai Indians. So CSK saying they are going to continue with MS – it is just the relationship, it is just the mutual respect. That’s why MS has been so loyal. That is the reason MSD has given everything: heart and soul, his sweat, sleepless nights – I’m sure he must have had sleepless nights while he has continued captaining CSK,” he added.
