Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has once again been appointed as the chief selector for the men's cricket team. The development comes a day after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that its men will travel to India for the 2023 ODI World Cup. Inzamam, who was in charge for three years from 2016 to 2019, has a huge task ahead of him as the 2023 Asia Cup and 50-over World Cup approaches.
The 53-year-old's first assignment will be to pick the squad for Pakistan's three-match ODI series against Afghanistan starting on August 22 in Sri Lanka. The series will be crucial for the Pakistan players as the squad for the continental tournament - jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka - will be announced based on the Afghanistan series. The next major task for the selection committee under Inzamam is to build a strong team that will shine in India.
Pakistan gear up as major multi-national tournaments approach
Since Zaka Ashraf took over as PCB chairperson, Pakistan has been trying to build a fresh set-up, and bringing back Inzamam might be a key move in that direction. The return of the legendary Pakistan batter follows the departure of Haroon Rasheed, who left the role last month. The board hopes that Inzamam's expertise as a player and as a former chief selector will help bring significant success to the team.
Recently, the PCB increased the salaries of the Pakistani players in their new central contracts. According to reports, players in the A Category – Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi – are on course to receive PKR 4.5 million (USD 15,900 approx) a month as a retainer. This is four times more than the amount in their last year’s contracts.
There were also reports that the PCB is considering sending a psychologist to India with the World Cup squad. This aims to keep the players mentally fit during the tournament, as they will have to deal with the pressure of big matches and crucial moments.
