Recently, Aaron Finch played his last ODI of his career as he signed off from the format at the age of 35. He retired from the format due to his poor form with the bat in this particular format this year. The right-hander could only score a little more than 160 runs in 14 games this year. Now, he will play only T20Is for his national side with him being out of reckoning from the Test side.
The Victorian's next assignment as captain will be the three-match T20I series against India. Ahead of the series, his teammate in the national side, Glenn Maxwell has backed his skipper to do well in the Indian conditions. Talking about Finch's record in India, he has played in seven games and has 205 runs at an average of 29.28, and a strike rate of 138.51 including a fifty.
"He'll certainly enjoy having these game in India, he enjoys batting there," Maxwell told reporters on Wednesday at the launch of the First Nations World Cup kit.
Aaron Finch has been able to focus on the job at hand: Glenn Maxwell
Maxwell added that once Finch gets on the field and takes control of the team, the latter has been able to focus on the job at hand. 'The big show' as Maxwell is fondly called by the fans has acknowledged that Finch hasn't had an easy time as skipper. However, Maxwell stated that Finch's attitude towards the game hasn't changed at all. The explosive batter also urged fans that Finch's strategic awareness can't be discounted.
"Once he gets out on the field and takes control of the team out there, he's been able to focus on the job at hand really well and that's a credit to him," Maxwell said.
"Obviously it wasn't the easiest time for him in one-day cricket but his attitude has never changed.
"He was brilliant with the strategy side of thing. It's a very underrated thing in T20.
"Don't discount his value as captain."
