Aakash Chopra believes that the Rajasthan Royals would not pick Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell in the upcoming auctions. The Australian cricketer has been released by Kings XI Punjab. RR will seem to pick an overseas batsman after releasing their captain Steve Smith. According to India's former batsman Aakash Chopra, it is unlikely to go for Maxwell in the auction this year. After releasing Steve Smith, the management chose Sanju Samson as the Royals' new skipper.
The exit of Smith leaves RR without a reliable middle-order batsman. Many believe that Glenn Maxwell is a perfect replacement. But the veteran India cricketer Aakash Chopra doesn't think that RR would go after him.
Considering the Royals' options ahead of next month's auction, Chopra expressed his opinion on the current squad. He mentioned what kind of players the franchise needs in order to strengthen its roster ahead of the league's 14th edition. Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and David Miller are the only foreign batsmen in the squad presently. Even though the franchise has Miller, Aakash Chopra believes that they need a more reliable overseas batsman at the No.5 position.
Rajasthan Royals should not have released Ajinkya Rahane: Aakash Chopra
Chopra mentioned the abundance of young talent in the team as a positive sign. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, and Kartik Tyagi are good options for the future. However, besides Sanju Samson, the team doesn't have any other Indian batsman to help them going forward in the tournament.
Aakash Chopra pointed out that the side might be regretting their decision to let Ajinkya Rahane move to the Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2020.
The 43-year-old suggested Dawid Malan, Jason Roy and Aaron Finch as some of the overseas batsmen RR could target in the auctions.
The Royals have also traded Robin Uthappa to the Chennai Super Kings ahead of the 14th edition of the league.
