Australia limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch announced his retirement from ODI cricket early in the day. He cited his poor form with the bat this year for such as decision. This year, the right-hander has played 13 games and has scored 169 runs. Finch's agony increased in the recent series against Zimbabwe as he got out of Richard Ngarwa in the entire series.

In the ongoing series against New Zealand, he has only been able to score five runs in two games. While announcing his retirement, the two-time World Cup winner said that he had an incredible over the years and was fortunate to be part of the team. He added that it is the right time to give the new leader some considerable time to prepare the team for the 2023 ODI World Cup.

"It has been a fantastic ride with some incredible memories," Finch said. "I have been extremely fortunate to be a part of some brilliant one-day sides. Equally, I have been blessed by all those I have played with and the many people behind the scenes.
"It is time now to give a new leader the best possible opportunity to prepare for and win the next World Cup. I thank all of those who have helped and supported my journey to this point."

Glenn Maxwell, who played with Finch in the victorious 2015 ODI World Cup and 2021 20-20 World Cup, posted an emotional post on Instagram. The latter congratulated Finch on his ODI career and reminisced a lot of memories.

“Congrats to this bloke on an amazing ODI career!! 17 tons in only 145 games, WC winner, captained for over a third of your career, unlimited double teapots, countless blow ups with me, 136000 bubbles blown while batting. Enjoy retirement my dear friend,” said Maxwell in a post.
