Former India cricketer Sachin Tendulkar attended an event in Mumbai on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day on 31st May where he revealed how he rejected several Tobacco brands that came to him for promotion. The 50-year-old said that his father advised him to never promote any tobacco brand.
Tendulkar had a legendary cricketing career and has been an inspiration for many young and aspiring cricketers in the country. He has scored 34,357 runs with a record 100 centuries across all formats. He said that a tobacco brand offered him to put their sticker on his bat to make money, but he refused it.
I have stayed away from these two things...: Sachin Tendulkar
"When I started playing for India, I had just come out of school. I started getting many advertisement offers but my father told me never to promote tobacco products. I got many such offers but never accepted any of them. This was a promise I made to my father. He told me I am a role model and a lot of people will follow what I do. That is why I have never endorsed tobacco products or alcohol. In the 1990s my bat didn’t have a sticker on it, I didn’t have a contract. But everybody else in the team was endorsing two brands in particular – Wills and Four Square,” Tendulkar was quoted as saying.
"I didn’t break the promise that I gave to my father by not endorsing these brands. I got many offers from them to endorse their brand by having their sticker on my bat but I didn’t want to promote all that. I have stayed away from these two things and have never broken the promise to my father,” he further added.
The fans are applauding Tendulkar after his statement but also targeting former cricketers like the former India skipper Kapil Dev and the Caribbean Chris Gayle for promoting tobacco-related products on Television. Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar and Virendra Sehwag are also being targeted for promoting products related to tobacco.
Well, it looks like Sachin Tendulkar decided to be a cricketing legend rather than a tobacco-pushing influencer. Good call, Sachin!

Shame how even Kapil dev being a role model at this age is promoting it. Capitalism and these marketing agencies will make everyone slowly get addicted to alcohol, smoking and tobacco.

The legend for a reason ♥️ I think for many people he will always remain one of the modest respected Indian cricketer for me. Dhoni and Rahul dravid on the list too.

Well, it's good to know that Sachin didn't get smoked by the tobacco companies' offer. He clearly put his daddy cool's advice into action and didn't let the temptation ash-tray him from being a responsible role model for his fans.

Sachin Tendulkar has always maintained the same integrity throughout his career. Not only on the field but off the field as well. It's his unpretentious nature and the perspicuity which makes him closer to so many cricket fans. A true legend of the game.

Ethics & ideologies like these with humble family background had him always grounded, going out there & doing the same drill, improving himself daily & becoming the best the game has to offer..
