Mumbai and Chennai played each other in the 33rd game of the ongoing Indian T20 League 2022. Before the game, the Men In Blue had lost all of their six games while the Yellow Army had won one. Meanwhile, the Ravindra Jadeja-led side won the toss and elected to field first. Mukesh Choudhary proved this right with two wickets in the first over.
On the second ball of the first over, opposition skipper Rohit Sharma (0) tried to play a shot over mid-off but was caught by Mitchell Santner. Three balls later, the left-arm pacer bowled an inswinger which disturbed the stumps behind Ishan Kishan (0). In form, Dewald Brevis (4) couldn't carry his form as he was caught behind by MS Dhoni off Choudhary. Suryakumar Yadav (32), who is the second-highest run-getter for the team, was caught by Choudhary off Santner.
The team was now tottering at 47/4 and needed a solid partnership. At this stage, debutant Hrithik Shokeen (25) and the highest run-getter for the team, Tilak Varma stitched a partnership of 38 runs. Shokeen tried to pull a bouncer by Dwayne Bravo and was caught by Robin Uthappa which ended his innings. Kieron Pollard (14) was caught at straight long-on by Shivam Dube off Maheesh Theekshana.
Players such as Varma (51*) and Jaydev Unadkat took the team to a fighting total of 155/7. In reply, the defending champions had a poor start as Ruturaj Gaikwad (0) was caught by Varma on the first ball of the innings. Santner (11) came in to hit a few quick runs but his plans were nullified by Sams.
The likes of Robin Uthappa (30) and Ambati Rayudu tried to steady the innings with a partnership of 50 runs. However, the partnership was ended by Jaydev Unadkat with the score reading 66/3 as he dismissed Uthappa. In form Shivam Dube (14) could not do much as he was caught behind by Ishan off Sams. In the 14th over of the innings, Rayudu (40) was caught by Pollard off Sams.Skipper Jadeja (3) was clean bowled by Sams in the 16th over. MS Dhoni (28*) and Dwaine Pretorius (22) stitched a partnership of 33 runs before the latter was trapped lbw by Unadkat.
The team needed 17 runs off five balls but Dhoni took the team over the line after he hit a six and two fours in the final four balls, taking Chennai to a three wicket win.
