On Tuesday, India's captain Rohit Sharma showed sportsmanship by declining to appeal for a run out against Sri Lanka's captain Dasun Shanaka during the first ODI in Guwahati. Despite Shanaka backing up too far during his journey to a valiant century, Rohit withdrew the appeal at the non-striker's end by Mohammed Shami, allowing Shanaka the chance to reach his milestone.

India had a strong performance with a total of 373 for 7, led by Virat Kohli's 73rd international hundred and contributions from Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Sri Lanka struggled in the match, losing half their team for 161, but Shanaka's 108 not out off 88 balls stood out as a bright spot for them.

"I had no idea Shami did that (run-out), he (Shanaka) was batting on 98. The way he batted was brilliant, we cannot get him out like that. Not something that we thought of, hats off to him, he played really well, "Indian skipper said in the post-match interview.

Rohit praised India's batting as well as the bowling to bring about a great all-round performance.

"We started off really well and to get that total was a great effort from all the batters. The platform was set to come out and plenty freely. I thought we could've bowled slightly better, but don't want to be too critical of it although the dew was not so much."

"We bowled well as unit and if you want to win games like this, everyone has to come to the party. There are some areas we need to look at as a group and again it's a team sport, "

My preparation and intent always remain the same- Kohli

Virat Kohli who brought about his 45th ODI century also seems to be out of his lean patch and claimed that his preparation was the same. "I don't think there was anything different. My preparation and intent always remain the same. I thought I was hitting the ball nicely. It was close to the template I play with, I understood we needed an extra 25-30 runs, " he said.
