Hanuma Vihari is ruled out of the fourth and final Test match of the 2020 Border Gavaskar Trophy. Vihari got a hamstring tear in the 3rd Test against Australia. The Indian batsman was taken for scans, and reports on his injury are yet to arrive.
India recently held Australia to a draw in the 3rd Test of the 2020 Border Gavaskar Trophy. India needed to chase a total of 404 to win the 3rd Test and take a 2-1 lead in the Test series. Rohit Sharma anchored the Indian innings, amassing 52 off 98 balls. Gill also looked solid initially. However, Josh Hazlewood dismissed Gill for just 31 runs. Pujara went on to stabilise the Indian batting lineup. With a brave knock of 77, everyone felt that India was still in the race. However, Rahane’s quick dismissal left everyone wondering if India could manage a comeback.
With India on the back foot, someone needed to step up. India’s blessing in disguise came in the form of Rishabh Pant. The Delhi southpaw smashed a quickfire 97 off just 118 balls. Prior to Pant’s dismissal, Ashwin and Vihari’s partnership ensured that Australia had no chance to seal a victory. The 3rd Test resulted in a draw as India ended their innings at 334/5.
However, with the hamstring injury, there is a chance that Vihari might be out for a long time. Vihari might also miss the home series against England.
Who are the contenders to replace Hanuma Vihari?
With Vihari out of the 4th Test, the Indian Test side will now reconsider its lineup for the final test of the 2020 Border Gavaskar Trophy. There are plenty of options available. The 3 major candidates to replace Vihari are Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw and Wriddhiman Saha.
Shardul Thakur set to replace Ravindra Jadeja
Another Indian player who is out of the 4th Test is Ravindra Jadeja. There is a possibility that Shardul Thakur will come in for the injured all-rounder. Shardul looked set to play the 3rd Test, but Navdeep Saini got the preference. Another option is T-Natarajan. With Shardul’s availability, it is unlikely for the other players to get the spot.
