Indian batsman Hanuma Vihari has left for the United Kingdom to feature for the Birmingham-based county side. The 27-year-old is going to play in at least three games this season. The IPL teams turned him down in IPL 2021 mini-auction, but Team India’s Test specialist batsman is all set to prepare for the forthcoming six-Test season in the United Kingdom. He will be playing for the English county side Warwickshire in England. The Warwickshire county’s official page hasn’t announced yet, but according to the BCCI officials, the arrangements are being worked out.
Hanuma Vihari last featured in the IPL back in 2019 for Delhi Capitals. Since then, the batsman has gone unsold at the successive auctions after being billed as a Test specialist. He made his Test debut for India back in the year 2018. The 27-year-old has amassed 624 runs in 12 Tests for India at an average of around 32. He has hit a century and four half-centuries so far. Vihari has played two matches for Delhi Capitals and 22 games for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has managed to accumulate 284 runs and picked up one wicket. Hanuma Vihari represents Andhra Pradesh in the Indian domestic circuit. Vihari has so far played 12 Tests, 90 first-class games, and 74 List A, and 74 T20 games.
BCCI wants Hanuma Vihari to play more competitive cricket in the upcoming months
Hanuma Vihari featured for India in the Sydney Test against Australia. His epic four-hour vigil (23 not out), with a torn hamstring alongside Ravichandran Ashwin, saved the match for the Men in Blue. He returned after a vivid rehabilitation at the NCA but had an indifferent Vijay Hazare Trophy for Andhra Pradesh. In that, he scored only a single half-century and failed to reach double digits in the next five matches.
Axar Patel and R Ashwin have also played county cricket in recent years. The most high-profile name which was expected to play country cricket (in 2018) but missed out due to injury was Indian captain Virat Kohli. Kohli had a contract with Surrey. Among other former Indian cricketers, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Murali Kartik, Zaheer Khan, Sachin Tendulkar, Dinesh Mongia, Anil Kumble, and Javagal Srinath played in County cricket for various teams like Leicestershire, Glamorgan, Middlesex, Lancashire, Northamptonshire, Somerset, Kent, and Surrey.
