The former legendary Indian skipper and former Indian Cricket Board president, Sourav Ganguly is celebrating his 51st birthday today. Ganguly was one of the most successful captains who ever led India. He had some immense contributions to Indian cricket. He led Team India for a few years and a lot of iconic cricketers were groomed during his captaincy tenure.

The Indian cricket fans are elated on this beautiful day for the Indian legend. They took to Twitter to extend a heartfelt birthday to him. Some of the fans also recalled a few historic moments the Indian team witnessed during his captaincy.

Speaking of his international cricketing career, Ganguly made his debut 31 years ago, back in the year 1992 against West Indies in a ODI game. In his 16-year-long illustrious career, he played 113 Tests and 311 ODIs till he hung his boots in international cricket in 2008.

In this long career, the former great Southpaw scored 7212 Test runs and 11363 ODI runs with 16 Test centuries and 22 ODI centuries. Apart from that, he also scalped 32 Test wickets and 100 ODI wickets with the ball while playing for India.

Ganguly took over the captaincy of India from former Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin during the time when Indian cricket was going through a very tough phase. It was under the shadow of a lot of controversies, including the match-fixing scandals involving former skipper Mohammed Azharuddin, alongside a lot of star players of that era.

Later, Team India started winning away under Dada’s captaincy, including the historic Natwest series in England. That particular moment also witnessed an unforgettable celebration from an Indian skipper when he waved his T-shirt from Lord’s Balcony. India had defeated the hosts England by a very close margin of 2 wickets to clinch the trophy.

After retiring from international cricket, the 51-year-old also served as the administrator in Indian cricket including presidentship of the Cricket Association of Bengal followed by being the president of the Indian Cricket Board.
