In an unexpected move by Justin Langer, he resigned as the head coach of the Australian team. Cricket Australia offered him an extension till the 20-20 World Cup, but Langer refused the offer anyway. The exact reasons for him stepping down are not yet known. However, there were reports that many senior players are not happy with Langer's way of managing the players.
Many ex-Australian cricketers have stepped in Langer's support amidst this controversy. And now, Mitchell Johnson has pointed out that Test captain Pat Cummins had many opportunities to defend Langer, but chose not to. Johnson added that Cummins has a lot of authority and wants to have a coach of his choice thus stayed mum. He also called Cummins gutless. "Pat Cummins has been lauded as some type of cricketing saint since his elevation to the top job this summer," he said as reported by Fox Sports.
"He had plenty of public opportunities to endorse an extension for Langer. So when he let it through to the keeper every time, it became pretty obvious he didn't want it to happen. Cummins holds a lot of power and must have been central to what's happened. He clearly had an agenda to get in a coach he wants. His recent interviews have been gutless by not respecting his coach when he could have been upfront from the start.
"The baggy green is hyped as the most revered symbol in Australian sport. But what does it stand for now? In the wake of the disgraceful white-anting of Langer as a coach, which led to his resignation on Saturday, it stands for selfishness."
Cummins had earlier revealed that a decision on Justin Langer will be taken by the management after analyzing his performance and players will have no say in this.
