The cricketing world praised Rohit Sharma's bravery as he walked out to save his team in Dhaka on Wednesday with a dislocated thumb. India were reduced to 207 for 7 while chasing a tricky 272-run target set by Bangladesh when Rohit decided to go out and try to save his team.
The Indian captain was rushed to the hospital earlier in the day after injuring himself while catching a ball at slips. He did not return in the middle, and vice-captain KL Rahul took over in his absence. However, when he walked down to bat with his left hand heavily taped, fans were left speechless. In the midst of pain and discomfort, the captain scored an unbeaten 51 off 28 balls, but India was unable to win the game.
It was phenomenal for him to show that level of courage: Rahul Dravid
Rahul Dravid, the team's head coach, lavished praise on Rohit, praising his bravery. Dravid provided insight into Rohit's mindset when he decided to bat at no. 9 during the post-match press conference on Wednesday.
"It was phenomenal for him to show that level of courage. He had a serious dislocation and had to go to the hospital to set that right. Stitches in his hand, and a couple of injections to be able to just go out and bat. But credit to him, he was really determined to go out and have a go and take a chance and it was amazing how close he brought us with that innings," Dravid said at the presser.
"It was an absolutely phenomenal innings by the skipper. Great courage to be able to go out there and take a chance but unfortunately, we couldn’t get over the line," he added.
Unfortunately, India will be without its captain in Saturday's third and final ODI in Chattogram. Dravid confirmed that Rohit, as well as Deepak Chahar and Kuldeep Sen, will miss the next game due to injuries. Rohit will consult with experts about the extent of his injury before making a decision on his participation in the two-match Test series, which begins next week in Chattogram.
