The entirety of the Indian cricketing fraternity woke up to the news of Umesh Yadav making his comeback to the Indian T20I side after three years. In a decision that has perplexed many, the right-arm pacer has been included in the Indian squad for the upcoming Australia series as a like-for-like replacement for Mohammad Shami.
In a piece of unfortunate news for the pace bowler and the Indian team, it was revealed on Saturday that Mohammad Shami had contracted COVID and would miss out on the upcoming T20I series against Australia.
Shami wasn’t picked for the Asia Cup 2022 and India bear the full force of a bad decision as the team crashed out embarrassingly after losing against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Super Four.
Selectors soon realised their mistake and named the pacer in the squad for Australia and South Africa series and also picked him as a reserve player for the 20-20 World Cup. This recent news however will be a setback for the pacer as it has snatched a very important opportunity for the bowler to get back to full swing.
While many fans were dejected by Shami’s exclusion news, the news of Yadav’s inclusion came in as a double-edged sword to them. A large section of the Indian fans was opposed to the idea of a bowler who hasn’t played for three years, suddenly appearing in the squad.
Yadav was called up to the Indian T20I team in 2010 but did not play any game. After two years, he played one game for the national side in 2012 and then went into the wilderness. In 2018-19 he made his comeback again after six years and 65 matches but again could not cement his place. Now after 3.5 years, the 34 years old is again making a comeback to the T20I side after 65 games.
The Nagpur born had a great Indian T20 League 2022 wherein he took 16 wickets in just 12 matches. His inclusion in the national 20-20 side is a reward for his performance in the Indian T20 League. Many Indian fans were vocal about Yadav’s inclusion in the team and let their feeling known on Twitter.
Here's the reaction to Umesh Yadav's inclusion in the Indian T20I squad for the Australia series:
There's Siraj, Khaleel, Arshdeep, Mohsin, Prasidh, Natarajan, so many quality T20 bowlers, but our management thinks it's best to bring in Umesh Yadav😭😭😭?
Even Chetan Sakariya is clear of that bum, why would you do this BCCI😭😭?
