Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming US Open due to a wrist injury. Currently ranked No. 92 in the ATP singles rankings, Kyrgios has been struggling with various injuries since the end of last year. He had earlier withdrawn from all three previous Grand Slams of the year, which led to a major drop in his ranking.
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist played just one game this year - a singles match at the Stuttgart Open in Germany in June, where he lost. He was unable to compete in the Australian Open as he underwent knee surgery. He then had to withdraw from the French Open due to a leg injury. The 28-year-old also pulled out of Wimbledon, citing a torn ligament in his wrist.
Announcing Kyrgios' withdrawal from this year's New York Major, the US Open posted on their Twitter handle: "Nick Kyrgios, a 2022 quarterfinalist, is out of this year's US Open. Hope to see you back on the court soon, Nick!"
Kyrgios, who achieved his career-high singles ranking of world No. 13 in 2016, is trying hard to back on court, but a return date is still unknown. The continuous exclusions from tournaments will push him out of the top 100 rankings later this month. It will be a big blow for the Aussie, who hasn't been ranked below No. 100 since March 2022.
My wrist is not ready yet to compete: Kyrgios
A few hours later the official statement from the US Open, Kyrgios took to his Instagram page to share an emotional note. When given an update on his wrist injury, he also expressed confidence that he will return to the track once he recovers.
"Heartbroken about the US Open, will be back....my wrist is not ready yet to compete. But may I remind people that I have a protected ranking of 21. When I choose to be back, I will be back where I belong," Kyrgios captioned his Instagram story.
The Canberra-born tennis player had his best US Open outing in 2022, where he reached the quarterfinals and lost to Russia's Karen Khachanov in a five-setter thriller.
