On Saturday, Virat Kohli decided to quit Test captaincy through a Tweet. This happened exactly a day after India lost the Test series to South Africa by a 2-1 margin. In his Tweet, Kohli mentioned how he took the role of the Test captain seven years back with a vision and completed the tasks that he was having in his mind.
Kohli finished as the most successful captain for India in the Tests, both in terms of the number of matches won and win percentage. He captained India in 68 Test matches, winning 40 and losing 17. Kohli became the only Indian captain to win four overseas Tests in a calendar year. He achieved this feat twice in a year.
Recently, India won the first Test match against South Africa in Centurion and Kohli became the first Asian captain to win a match at this venue. India is only the third team to win a Test match in Centurion. Kohli won seven matches in SENA countries and became the most successful Asian captain in these countries.
Under Kohli’s leadership, India won 16 Test matches out of 36 in overseas conditions. After winning the first Test match against South Africa, Kohli became the first Asian captain to win two Boxing day fixtures in the rainbow nation.
Kohli first captained India in Test cricket in 2014 and became a full-time captain the very next year, after MS Dhoni decided to hang his boots in Test cricket. India is currently the number one team in Rankings. India retained the number one position for 42 months from October 2016 till March 2020 under Kohli’s leadership.
Here’s how Bollywood reacted to the news of Virat Kohli stepping down:
