Here's why MS Dhoni can't play the 'Legends League'

MS Dhoni hasn't made his presence felt in any tournament besides the Indian T20 League and there is a reason behind it.

India’s legendary cricketer, MS Dhoni retired from International cricket on 15th August 2020 and drew curtains on his 15-year-long remarkable career. Since then, the fans only watch him participate in the Indian T20 League.

He led the Chennai franchise in the 2021 and 2022 editions of the tournament and will be playing in the upcoming edition as well. Currently, a couple of T20 leagues for retired players are going on, namely the Legends League Cricket and Road Safety World Series.

The fans would have loved to see MS Dhoni participate in those tournaments and lead one of the teams as well. However, he hasn’t made his presence felt in either of those tournaments but there is a reason behind it.

For those of you who don’t know, any player, who is participating in the Indian T20 League or any form of Indian domestic tournament which is conducted by the Indian Cricket Board in India, cannot take part in the leagues other leagues happening across the globe.

The day MS Dhoni stops playing the Indian T20 League, he can play various other T20 leagues. Besides, he cantake the coaching duties for his own Chennai franchise as well as Johannesburg Super Kings in the upcoming SA T20 tournament.

Earlier, MS Dhoni confirmed that he will be playing the 2023 edition of the Indian T20 League and it means that he won’t be allowed to play other leagues such as Legends League Cricket, Big Bash League, The Hundred, Vitality T20 Blast, etc.

MS Dhoni hasn’t fared too well in the last two editions of the Indian T20 League. The franchise too failed to reach the playoffs in both seasons. In the last edition, he managed to score 232 runs in 14 matches at an average and a strike rate of 33.14 and 123.40 respectively. It will be interesting to see how he fares in the 2023 edition, which is also likely to be his last.
