During the fourth game against New Zealand in Karachi on Friday, Pakistan captain Babar Azam became the fastest batter to reach 5,000 runs in a one-day international match in the quickest time ever. When the 28-year-old took a single to get to 19 during Pakistan's innings after they were sent into bat by New Zealand, he broke former South African batter Hashim Amla's record, who took 101 innings to achieve the milestone.
Babar has now played 97 innings in 99 one-day internationals, surpassing Amla's record of 101 innings from 104 games. He came close to breaking Amla's record for the fastest 4,000 ODI runs in 81 innings last year. For the past two years, Azam has topped the ODI batter's rankings.
He is the 14th player from Pakistan to reach 5,000 runs in one-day international cricket, with former skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq leading the way with 11,701 runs. In his hometown of Lahore, Pakistan, the right-hander made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in May 2015. Having accomplished the feat in 2016 and 2022, he is also the only batter to twice register consecutive hundreds in three ODIs.
Brilliant performance by Pakistan against New Zealand
Babar is frequently compared to Kohli these days, which is also one of the main reasons why he receives online abuse. Even though he has surpassed the former Indian captain and became the fastest to reach 5000 runs, it is important to remember that Kohli did it against better bowling attacks when he was only 24 years old and continued to play in the same manner for more than a decade.
Regarding the series, Pakistan has already clinched victory after winning the first three games. The first two games were won by them at Rawalpindi by margins of five and seven wickets, respectively, and in the third game in Karachi, they defeated the Black Caps by a score of 26 runs. In the fourth game, New Zealand is currently vying for a consolation victory. The National Stadium will host the final match of New Zealand's trip, which also featured a three-match T20I series.

He may not have played as many brilliant innings as Kohli but the fact is that he doesn't get out early in ODIs, his consistency is top class.

Just a friendly reminder that Babar was shameless enough to play in a 3 match ODI series against the Netherlands
