In the first Test of the series, Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by chasing down a 342-run target. By chasing the highest total at the Galle International Stadium with this victory, they made history. Abdullah Shafique was the pillar of the chase as he stayed unbeaten in the innings. The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the series.

Sri Lanka batted first and scored 222 runs in the first innings. They could not do much as Shaheen Afridi, along with Yasir Shah and Hasan Ali, was at the top of his game. Afridi took four wickets in the innings, while Yasir and Ali took two each. For Sri Lanka, Dinesh Chandimal continued his brilliant form from the Australia series and scored 76 runs in 115 balls. Maheesh Theekshana, with his score of 38 runs in 65 balls, was the next highest run scorer.

In the next innings, the Pakistan team had big trouble settling in on a turning track. Except for team skipper Babar Azam, nobody had any impact in the innings. Azam went on to score 119 runs in 244 balls, which helped the visitors post a score of 218 runs on the board, handing Sri Lanka a four-run lead.

Left-arm orthodox bowler Prabath Jayasuriya took five wickets in the match, while Ramesh Mendis and Theekshana took two each. As three of its players reached a half-century in the following innings, Sri Lanka appeared more composed. Oshada Fernando (64 runs in 125 balls), Kusal Mendis (76 runs in 126 balls), and Chandimal (94 runs in 139 balls) all contributed to their score of 337 runs.

Both of Pakistan's openers showed respect for the good balls as they approached this high total with caution. Babar Azam (55) managed the innings after Imam-ul-Haq's controversial dismissal. The young batter Abdullah Shafique, however, emerged with a mature innings of 160 to demolish Sri Lanka's bowling unit. Mohammad Rizwan also made a significant 40 runs in the run chase. Mohammad Nawaz (19*) and Shafique (160*), for Pakistan, were the ones to cross the finish line.
