India’s women’s fours lawn bowls team created history on Monday when it guaranteed the country’s first medal in the sport by reaching the final of the event. The team looked eager to make history at the Grand stage of the Commonwealth Games 2022 as they aimed to seal the top spot in the final against heavyweight South Africa.
The team entered the annals of history on Tuesday as they secured the coveted ‘Gold’ in the finals beating South Africa by 17-10. A medal in lawn bowls, a sport not that popular in India, is a feat that will be remembered in the years to come.
With 10 medals under their belt, India are currently ranked sixth in the medals tally. They have four Gold and three Silver and three Bronze to their name. India have a good chance to topple South Africa for the 5th spot and even move higher up the order by overtaking Canada if they’re able to add more Gold medals to their tally. The bigger challenge for India will be to move into the top three spot by reducing the gap between them and New Zealand, who have 13 gold medals to their name so far.
India finished on the third spot in the medals tally in the 2018 edition of the Games in Gold Coast, Australia where they won a total of 66 medals out of which 26 were Gold. Their best ever performance came in the 2010 edition of the sporting event where they finished on the second spot, winning 101 medals out of which, 38 were Gold.
