World No. 1 T20 batter Suryakumar Yadav produced a scintillating performance in the third T20I against West Indies to keep India alive in the five-match series in Guyana on Tuesday, August 8. Yadav, who had failed to get runs in the first two matches, hit 83 off 44 balls to help the visitors chase down a target of 169 with two overs to spare.

Although Suryakumar has established himself as one of the most dangerous T20 batters in a short span of time, he is yet to make a mark in the 50-over format. He has not been able to play an impressive innings in ODIs, and even in the recent three-match series against West Indies, he was unable to perform well.

However, when asked about his ODI form during the post-match presentation of the third T20I, the middle-order batter did not hesitate to admit that his numbers were very poor.

"If I am honest with myself, I know that my ODI numbers are very bad. I have no shame in admitting that because it is more important to figure out how to better it. So, what Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid told me was that I do not play this format very often, so I need to practice more," Yadav told the reporters after the 3rd T20I game in Guyana.

They want me to play 45-50 balls in a match: Suryakumar Yadav

With the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup fast approaching, Indian selectors will want Suryakumar to find his groove in the format, as the participation of injured Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul is still unknown. The 32-year-old also revealed what skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid want from him in ODIs.

The management hopes that if SKY bats in T20 mode in the last 15-18 overs, the game will change significantly. Notably, in the recently concluded series against the West Indies, he batted lower down the order to experiment how it works.

"They asked me to spend some time in the crease and think about how I can be useful for the team in the last 10-15 overs. They want me to play 45-50 balls in a match, if I bat in the last 15-18 overs and they have given me the freedom of how I want to go about it," Suryakumar added.
