India Badminton player HS Prannoy has been crowned as the number one player in BWF World Tour Rankings in the men's single category. The ranking was updated on September 6, and the Indian player emerged as the top player in the world rankings. Talking about the 2022 BWF World Tour, it started on January 11 this year and will end on December 18. Notably, this is the fifth season of the world tour.
It includes 22 tournaments which will lead to the final of the tour in December. All of these tournaments are divided into five levels. Level one is the World Tour finals, followed by Level two called Super 1000. The third and fourth levels are called Super 750 and Super 500 respectively. The fifth and the last is called Super 300. Different prize money and ranking points are offered at each of these tournaments.
Prannoy's rise to the top has been an intriguing one. He started this year with a quarterfinal finish in the India Open in January. The champion player once again finished in the quarterfinal of the Syed Modi International in the same month. Two months later, he finished in the quarterfinal for the third consecutive time, followed by a first-round finish in the All England Open.
His rut continued in the Korea Open 2022 in early April as he was eliminated in the first round. This was followed by another forgettable finish in Thailand Open held in May.
HS Prannoy's performance improved since the Indonesia Open
The shuttler's performance improved considerably in the Indonesia Open in June this year. He finished in the semifinal but lost the quarterfinals at the 2022 Malaysia Open. The next month, the shuttler finished the tournament after losing in the semifinal of the Malaysia Masters 2022. In the Singapore Open which followed in the same month, Prannoy earned a quarterfinal finish. Recently, he beat Loh Kean Yew of Singapore in the Japan Open Super 750 tournament to qualify for the quarterfinal of the tournament.
