A strange incident that occurred during a Big Bash League game on Saturday between the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades at Docklands Stadium sparked controversy on social media. In the third over of the Stars' innings, Renegades pacer Will Sutherland delivered a ball that wicketkeeper-batter Joe Clarke mishit into the retractable roof of the stadium. The on-field umpire immediately gave the signal for a six when the ball touched down inside the thirty-yard circle.
13 overs later, all-rounder Beau Webster similarly knocked Tom Rodgers to the ceiling. This time, the ball landed near the pitch, but six runs were still given. The choice infuriated many people, including Renegades captain Aaron Finch.

“That would have been two simple catches tonight. They were both straight up. That would have been out,” a mic’d up Finch had told the commentary team during the game.
Notably, it was decided that in situations like these, the batter would be awarded a six rather than the delivery being ruled a dead ball after the Renegades' current captain hit the roof in the second season of the BBL.
Mark Howard responded that the rule was put in place because of the former Australia ODI captain when Finch later claimed that this was a catching opportunity. “This is your rule skipper (to Finch), you’ve caused this problem,” he said.
The match was ultimately won by the Renegades, albeit dramatically. The Stars were cruising when they needed 54 runs to win off 51 balls and eight wickets in hand after they batted first and scored 162/7. On the other hand, the Renegades put on an amazing choke in the final overs to win the game by six runs.
In the meantime, fans were upset with the decision to award six runs. "Yeah..... that's gotta be a dead ball. Not a 6," a user tweeted. "Most idiotic rule in cricket rn," another one wrote.
Here is how Twitter reacted
This destroys standard of cricket...🙄
Better change the rule...
If ball touches the #roof beyond 30 yard circle will be considered as #SIX 🚶— Nithil Imayam (@NITHILIMAYAM) January 14, 2023
If the ball hits the roof 'outside the 30 yards circle', only then it should be deemed as 6.
Similarly, if a fielder catches it after any contact within the 30 yards circle, it should be given as out— Aditya Mantry (@aditya_mantry) January 14, 2023
It brought back memories of watching Full Toss on Hungama TV.
They had fun/gully rules of scoring runs; especially scoring 8 runs.

Retractable roof six should really be a dead ball
If it hits the non retractable roof six.— Jayden O'Halloran (he/him/his) ♊️🇺🇦📻🎶 💉x4 (@thediamondduck) January 14, 2023

Rule change: if it lands inside the ring, play on. Outside the ring, 6.

Some new rules BBL can add
- one bounce catch with one hand out
- beech ka bichhu( one common player in both teams)
- ball hit by batter if it cross 100 m then out
- 11th batter can bat and run alone if all the wickets are down
- instead of toss, this method can be used pic.twitter.com/ucTqNBo2da— Bharbhuti ji (@crickdevil) January 14, 2023
