Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik has reacted to Shahid Afridi's comment of almost quitting international cricket back in 2009. Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi had accepted that he decided to leave international cricket in 2009 due to politics in the Pakistan national team. However, Shahid Afridi also disclosed that he chose not to play cricket anymore when Shoaib Malik was handed over the captaincy reigns. In response to Afridi’s comment, Malik stated that if the veteran thought he was rushed into captaincy at the time, then the former Pakistan skipper is absolutely right.

Shoaib Malik was named as the captain of the team in 2007

Shoaib Malik, who is one of the most successful white-ball all-rounders on the Pakistani national team, was named as the captain of the team in 2007. He became the fourth-youngest skipper of the green army in 2007 at the age of 25. Under Shoaib Malik's captaincy, the Men in Green played three Tests, drawing one and losing two. One of the defeats came against the Indian cricket team during the 2007/08 season. In ODI's, Pakistan went on to win 24 out of 36 games. On the other hand, in T20Is, they won 12 out of 17 games.

Malik, who is married to India’s tennis player Sania Mirza was only 17 when he made his debut for Pakistan. However, the all-rounder’s career was far from easy as he was always involved in one or the other controversies. The 39-year-old all-rounder is still trying to find a spot for himself in the national cricket team.

Shoaib Malik made his debut for Pakistan against West Indies back in the year 1999. So far, the all-rounder has represented Pakistan in 287 One Day Internationals scoring 7534 runs and claiming 158 wickets. The 39-year-old has also featured in 116 T20 International matches and 35 Test matches, scoring 2335 and 1898 runs, respectively. Malik was last seen in action in 2019 against Team India at Old Trafford. He has not played an international game in the shortest format since 2020. Malik is likely to hang up his boots from the shortest format of the game after the forthcoming T20 World Cup. The veteran has already retired from Tests as well as One Day Internationals.
