Sunil Gavaskar doesn't see R Ashwin returning to the Indian limited-overs team. The off-spinner recently jumped up to the fifth position among all-rounders in ICC Test Player Rankings. Ashwin last played a One day International for India back in 2017. Ashwin's form in the ongoing Test series against England has led the talks of his return to the limited-overs team.
Ashwin played one of his best knocks in the second test against England as he brought up his fifth hundred in tests at Chennai. The 33-year-old also scalped a fifer in the first innings. This was the third time Ashwin got a five-wicket haul and a hundred in a Test match. His all-round performance earned him the Man of the Match Award.
Ashwin should continue to be part of Team India in the longest format of the game: Sunil Gavaskar
Gavaskar discussed that it would be tough for Ashwin to be a part of the limited-overs team with players like Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja in the squad. The duo has already stamped their authority in the white-ball format. Gavaskar added that the spinner doesn't fit in the current Indian team combination.
Former English cricketer Mark Butcher believes that Ashwin might be in contention for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The retired batsman praised Ashwin for improving his fitness and flexibility in the field, which was a massive concern over the years.
Talking about the IPL, Ashwin was retained by the Delhi Capitals ahead of the auction this year. The off-spinner will be keen to perform well to make a case for himself in the game's shortest format.
In the ongoing Test series, India suffered a 227-run defeat in the first game after Joe Root smashed a brilliant double-century. The England skipper continued his excellent form with the bat in the sub-continent. However, Team India bounced back in the second game and won the match by 317 runs. Ashwin stole the show with his all-round performance as he picked up eight wickets and scored a century. The victory helped team India to level the series 1-1.
