Ian Chappell, the former Australian skipper, has lauded Ravichandran Ashwin for his strengthened performance in the ongoing test series against Australia. For years, critics have blamed Ashwin for his failure to deliver in the overseas conditions. However, the off-spinner has proven its worth with several scintillating performances in the ongoing series.
Along with Pat Cummins, Ashwin is the joint-highest wicket-taker. So far, the spinner has picked up 10 wickets, which includes the dismissal of Steve Smith twice. During the Adelaide Test, Ravichandran Ashwin has dismissed Smith for 1. In the first innings of the MCG test, he had sent Smith back for a duck.
Ian Chappell explained all about Ashwin’s progress
So far, Ravichandran Ashwin has set up a fine display in Australia. Ian Chappell was asked what the spinner had done better this time around, which contributed to his performance. In his answer, Chappell has mentioned that Ashwin has learned a lot from each of his previous tours. He has attempted to do better in his next tours.
Ian Chappell has further said that Ashwin is a clever cricketer. And all good cricketers figure out what they have to do to develop their game. Hence, Chappell couldn’t take his hat off to Ashwin, as he has tried hard to do better in the overseas games.
The former skipper has further pointed out that Ravichandran Ashwin has outwitted the Australian batsmen. In the last two test matches against Australia, Ashwin has bowled in an unusual line to be successful as an off-spinner. According to Chappell, Ashwin appears to be bowling more of a middle-stump line and it has generated difficulties for the Australians.
The ongoing four-match series is currently tied at 1-1. The third Test of the series is scheduled to be played from January 7 at the SCG.
