T20 World Cup

The BCCI has received a deadline from the International Cricket Council to decide on the hosting of the T20 World Cup. The BCCI has to take the decision before 28th June. ICC stakeholders had a virtual meeting with Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah on 1st June to discuss the issue.

It has been reported earlier that BCCI had asked for more time from ICC to decide on the issue. Now, they have been given a month to access the Covid-19 situation in India before giving a final decision. They would have to get back to the ICC with a concrete plan. The T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place in India between October and November this year.

On 29th May, Sourav Ganguly told members of BCCI that they would seek extra time from ICC to decide on the situation. India’s capability of hosting the tournament would depend on how well the pandemic is controlled.

There has been a surge in COVID-19 cases in India for the past few months

The doubts regarding the holding of the event in India emerged after the postponement of IPL 2021. Covid-19 had breached the secure bio bubble that the teams were kept in. Some players and staff members tested positive for the virus in the bio-bubble. So, the league had to be postponed. It is now rescheduled to be held in UAE in the September-October window just before the T20 World Cup.

Moreover, according to some medical experts, during the T20 World Cup event, India would likely experience the third wave of Covid-19. India is now going through the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier, The BCCI had proposed nine venues in India to the ICC for the T20 World Cup. A team from ICC was also scheduled to fly to India to check out and access the venues. But, the visit has been postponed due to the ongoing pandemic crisis in India.

The ICC recently announced that the men’s T20 World Cup would now see 20 teams playing for the Cup. Furthermore, the tournament would now take place every two years from 2024 to 2030.
