India and Pakistan stopped playing bilateral series and the two teams face off against each other only in the multinational tournaments, due to an ongoing political conflict between the two nations. The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) came forward to host a Test match between the two sides and this comes on the back of the humungous attendance during the recently concluded 20-20 World Cup 2022 clash.
For the unversed, over 90,000 people attended the game at the iconic venue, eventually forcing the Chief executive staff of MCC Stuart Fox to approach Cricket Australia (CA) to see the possibility of making the idea into a reality. Saying that it would be ‘lovely’ to host three Test matches in a row at the venue, Fox claimed that it would become an iconic moment.
We've taken that up with Cricket Australia: Stuart Fox
Highlighting the challenges in hosting the match between the Men in Blue and the Babar Azam-led side, Fox said that it would be one of the greatest moments in the history of cricket. Further, the chief executive opined on his desire to witness the same happening at the earliest, given that the two sides are known for their mighty presence in the cricketing world.
“The atmosphere for that game, I've never felt anything like it. The noise after every ball was phenomenal. Three (Tests) in a row would be lovely at the MCG, you'd fill it every time. We've taken that up with Cricket Australia (CA); I know the (Victoria) government has as well (spoken to CA). It's enormously complicated from what I can understand, amongst a really busy schedule. So I think that's probably the greater challenge,” Fox was quoted as saying to radio station SEN.
“When you do see some of the stadiums around the world unoccupied, I think it would be much better to have a full house and that atmosphere and celebrating the game with full houses,” he added. It remains to be seen if it would become a reality given that the teams last faced against each other in a bilateral series way back in 2013.
