Steve Smith has had a good run with the bat off the late and he remained unbeaten on 48 off 80 balls in the last match against Zimbabwe, albeit he was criticized for the strike rate. The batter is known for his grit and gut but he was never as good in T20Is as he was in ODIs and Tests. However, the 33-year-old has played some tremendous knocks in the shortest format of the game and aims to be a part of the 20-20 World Cup 2022 squad.

Having known for his passion, the Australian veteran is considered to be the best in recent times but has been under the carpet of late due to a lack of runs. This is not deceived him as he still believes that he can make a cut to the squad for the shorter format World Cup to be held in Australia later this year.

The 33-year-old told the reporters on Tuesday that he wants to play in the shortest format of the game and believed that he could emulate the likes of Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh.

"I feel like when I'm playing good T20 cricket, I'm in that team for sure. I think the role that I've been given in the last couple of years is the Mr. Fix-it sort of role, and that tag's been taken away from me now (since) the Sri Lanka tour," he told the reporters.

When I'm playing my best, I play freely: Steve Smith

The veteran Australian believes that he can do his best for Australia in putting up a total or in chasing. He was happy to hint at his style of play and added that he does what he wants to do.

"I felt like I could go out and just play with a lot more freedom naturally (in Sri Lanka) and not have any kind of hesitation in the back of my mind, like I need to be a bit more reserved or anything. I can just take the game on and if I want to smack someone for six first ball, then I'm able to do that freely. When I'm playing my best, I play freely. I watch the ball and hit the gaps and just look to use the middle of my bat as much as possible," Smith said.

The batter went on to compliment his third-spot rival Mitchell Marsh and said that he will be a part of the campaign at the World Cup. "It's obviously not ideal for Mitch. He's been playing some really good white-ball cricket recently. He was obviously a big part of our T20 World Cup campaign last year and I'm sure there's big plans for him this year, so I think the priority is to get him right for that," he concluded.
