Kolkata beat Mumbai by five wickets to further solidify their top position in the Indian T20 League points table. Chasing a target of 162, Kolkata lost Ajinkya Rahane in the 5th over when the scoreboard read 16-0. Kolkata batters were struggling to find the boundaries and the pressure of the required rate was choking the team. The team was struggling at 101-5 in the 14th over and all hopes relied on Venkatesh Iyer, who was there since the start. However, against all odds, it was Pat Cummins who stole the show. Cummins hit the joint-fastest fifty in 14 balls to take his team through. He hit 35 runs in the 16th over to finish off the game. Cummins hit four fours and six massive sixes in his innings.

In the first innings, Mumbai too struggled in the first few overs. Dewald Brevis, the 18-year old debutant, then scored a quick cameo of 29 runs in 19 balls to get Mumbai's inning up and running. However, he was stumped in the 8th over which was followed by the wicket of Ishan Kishan, leaving Mumbai in tatters at 55-3 in 11 overs.

Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma then started the repair work and later added a few quick runs. They added 83 runs together, with Suryakumar scoring a 50. He got 52 runs in 36 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes. Varma played a handy knock as well and scored 38 runs in 27 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes. Pollard scored 22 in 5 balls of the last over to take Mumbai to a respectable 161.

With the ball, Kolkata was economical but did get many wickets. They only managed four wickets in the match, with Pat Cummins getting two and Umesh Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy taking one.

For Mumbai, Murugan Ashwin and Tymal Mills took two wickets each. Daniel Sams took one wicket as well but was extremely expensive. Except for Basil Thampi, all of Mumbai's main bowlers were expensive in the match.
