Sunil Gavaskar opines that Team India will need to make a couple of changes in their playing XI. The visitors will have to make a comeback for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.
Indian opener, Shaw was dreadfully out of form in the first pink-ball Test at the Adelaide Oval. The youngster was dismissed in a similar way in both the innings. Shaw did not look ready for the Australian pace challenge.
Gavaskar believes that Shaw needs to be dropped from the team. He further added the experienced KL Rahul should come in as his replacement at the top of the order.
Rahul's Test record has been not so excellent in Australia. However, he has a century to his name. The wicket-keeper batsman has scored 187 runs in the five Tests he has played Down Under.
On the other hand, Gavaskar thinks his brilliant ODI form can help him deliver consistently for India in the longer format as well. India will not witness the services of skipper Virat Kohli for the rest of the series. He is heading back to India on paternity leave this week.
Gavaskar also supports Gill to replace the 32-year-old in the batting line-up. The youngster looked promising in the practice games against Australia A. With this, Gavaskar believes that he can make a difference for the Men in Blue.
Team India should believe that they can come back in the Test series: Sunil Gavaskar
At the end of day two, the visitors had a 62-run lead and looked set to reach a massive total. However, what happened next was an unbelievable batting collapse. The Indian line-up was out for just 36 runs. This has been their lowest Test total ever.
Hence, Australia won the first encounter by eight wickets and took a 1-0 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Team India's morale will be low after the disgrace trounce. Gavaskar further stated that India should still have faith in themselves as three more matches are yet to be played.
The commentator feels India should believe that they can still make a strong return in the remaining series. The visitors will also lack the services of Shami. The pacer has fractured his wrist in the first Test while facing a short ball from Cummins. With crucial absentees in both the batting and bowling areas, the Indian side will need to find some inspiration against the hosts.
