India lost the fifth Test match against England by seven wickets, and they were also penalised with two points in the World Test Championship Standings. India had a slow over-rate during the match, which cost them two points in the standings. In addition to the points penalty, India has been penalised 40% of their match fee for the offence.
As a result of the points deduction, India has dropped below Pakistan to fourth place in the ICC World Test Championship standings. After the penalty, India has 75 points (point percentage of 52.08), which is only marginally less than Pakistan's PCT of 52.38 per cent.
Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel states that players are penalised 20% of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl in the specified time. Furthermore, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) playing conditions, a team is penalised one point for each over that is not completed. India was deducted of two WTC points because they fell short by two overs.
After on-field umpires Aleem Dar and Richard Kettleborough, third umpire Marais Erasmus, and fourth umpire Alex Wharf upheld the charge, David Boon of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the penalties.
As for the match, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root snatched the game from India in the fourth innings. While chasing a huge total of 378 runs, the two played an exceptional game. They added a partnership of 269 runs, with each scoring a century. Root scored 142 runs in 173 balls, while Bairstow scored 114 runs in 145 balls to complete his twin-century.
This was the highest chase by England in the history of Test Cricket. With this win, the Ben Stokes-led team levelled the five-match series 2-2. The match at the Edgbaston Stadium was a rescheduled match from India's tour of England in 2021. The final match of the series had to be postponed due to a covid outbreak in the visitor's camp.
