In a major development, Indian team captain Rohit Sharma has tested positive for Covid-19. The 35-year-old has been put under isolation in the team hotel, and his availability for the rescheduled fifth Test match against England is in doubt.
If the norms are the same as England's ongoing Test series against New Zealand, the isolation protocol will be of five days. The rescheduled Test match starts on the 1st of July. As reported by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Rohit tested positive in the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) on Saturday.
"Team India captain Mr Rohit Sharma has tested positive for COVID-19 following a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) conducted on Saturday. He is currently in isolation at the team hotel and is under the care of the BCCI Medical Team. An RT-PCR test will be conducted on Sunday to ascertain his CT value," read BCCI's statement.
However, this is not the first positive case in the Indian camp. Earlier, former Indian captain Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin had also tested positive. While Kohli later returned negative results, Ashwin had to miss his flight to the UK. His availability for the Test match still remains under the radar.
In the meanwhile, Rohit's positive test result came after the third day of play in the warm-up match against Leicestershire. He scored runs in the first innings of the warmup game but did not come out to bat in the second innings.
India in the warmup game
In the first innings, the Indian team scored runs, with Srikar Bharat and Virat Kohli playing a brilliant game. The two scored 70 and 33 runs, respectively. Leicestershire, in return, scored 244 runs, with Rishabh Pant scoring a half-century. India had a lead of 2 runs in the first innings.
Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, and Virat Kohli scored a half-century in India's next innings, taking the score to 364 runs at the end of day three. Birmingham's Edgbaston Stadium will host the fifth match. India currently leads the five-match series 2-1.
