India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series by defeating West Indies by three runs in the first match. Both of the young teams put on some incredible batting displays during the game, but India ultimately won on the very last ball. Mohammed Siraj held his nerves to win the match in the final over.

West Indies won the toss and decided to bowl first at Queen’s Park Oval, but India got off to a flying start with the bat. The match was perfectly started off by Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill, who returned to the ODI team. The two only took chances on bad deliveries while putting on a fantastic performance to score a few runs. In their opening partnership, the pair scored a half-century each and combined 119 runs. In the 18th over, Nicholas Pooran executed a superb run-out to dismiss Gill (64).

After that, Dhawan (97) and Shreyas Iyer (54) partnered up and added on the brilliant start. They used a similar batting strategy, but by the 36th over, for a team total of 230, they were both dismissed in quick succession. India then slowed down and lost a couple more wickets. They had little luck, but they still put 308/7 on the board.

In the chase, West Indies lost an early wicket, but Kyle Mayers (75) and Shamarh Brooks (46) were able to keep the innings under control. On an excellent batting pitch, the two batters maintained their run rate and contributed 117 runs for the second wicket partnership. In his two consecutive overs, Shardul Thakur finally got rid of the two set batters. The hosts were 138/3 by the 26th over.

However, runs continued to come in for the men in maroon as most of their batters did well.  India was put up a strong fight by Brandon King (54), Nicholas Pooran (25), and the tail. The equation was 15 runs in the last over with Akeal Hosein (32) and Romario Shepherd (39) at the strike.

Mohammed Siraj maintained his composure in the last over even though it was anyone's game. He was hit for a four in the over, but bowled brilliantly to allow only 11 runs to be scored. On the game's last delivery, he was also able to stop four runs from being scored.
