Former Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir pointed out the problem in Kolkata Knight Riders' current squad. The veteran mentioned that the team lacks firepower when it comes to the Indian batting unit. The team brought back Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan and have also roped in Harbhajan Singh and Karun Nair. The Eoin Morgan-led side has also picked a few uncapped players at the auctions on Thursday. KKR had the lightest budget of ₹10.75 crores to spend at the auction. With around eight slots to fill, the KKR team management had to play their cards very sensibly.

Kolkata got the veteran off-spinner, Harbhajan Singh, at his base price of Rs 2 crore

Among the players that the franchise bagged, the name that was quite surprising was Harbhajan Singh. The Chennai Super Kings released him after spending three years with the team. The spinner had a base price of Rs 2 crore after having skipped IPL 2020 due to personal reasons. Harbhajan went unsold during the first set of the IPL auction, being bought when his name popped up for the second time. The 40-year-old has not played competitive cricket since the IPL 2019 final.

The Kolkata Knight Riders also picked Ben Cutting (INR 75 lakhs), Karun Nair (INR 50 lakhs), Pawan Negi (INR 50 lakhs), Sheldon Jackson (INR 20 lakhs), Venkatesh Iyer (INR 20 Lakhs), and Vaibhav Arora (INR 20 lakhs).
