Punjab defeated Hyderabad by five wickets in the last league game of the Indian T20 League 2022. Despite losing a few wickets while chasing a below-par total of 158, Punjab maintained a good scoring rate. In the end, they enjoyed an easy win to end their season on a high note.
Mayank Agarwal won the toss and chose to bat first at the Wankhede Stadium. However, they did not have the finest of starts though, as they lost an early wicket. They scored 43 runs in the powerplay, with Abhishek Sharma (43) leading the way. He looked good alongside Rahul Tripathi early on. Until the ninth over, the pair added 47 runs to their partnership. However, Harpreet Brar dismissed Tripathi (20) for a team total of 61 runs.
Following that, Hyderabad were unable to form any major partnerships. They lost three more wickets before the end of the 15th over, accumulating 96 runs in the team's total. Washington Sundar and Romario Shepherd then worked well together to get the team back into the game. In the end, they lost a couple of more wickets, but scored 157 runs. Kagiso Rabada picked one wicket, while Brar and Nathan Ellis each took three.
In the chase, Punjab scored runs at a quick pace, but lost early wickets. They scored 62 runs in the first six overs while losing two wickets. They also lost their skipper Mayank Agarwal (one) in the eighth over for a team total of 71. Shikhar Dhawan and Liam Livingstone then put on an important 41-run stand until the 13th over. Fazalhaq Farooqi dismissed Dhawan (39), and the equation was down to 38 runs in the last 42 balls.
Liam Livingstone (49) was dropped several times, costing Hyderabad the match. The English all-rounder kept smashing the ball as he then guided the side to a comfortable win in the 16th over.
