Punjab beat Chennai by 11 runs in the 38th match of the Indian T20 League 2022. Chennai decided to bowl first at the Wankhede Stadium after winning the toss. Punjab had a slow but sensible start to their innings. Shikhar Dhawan and Mayank Agarwal were not looking to hit big early on. Agarwal (18), however, could not hold for long as he fell to Maheesh Theekshana in the sixth over. Punjab managed 37 runs in the powerplay. Shikhar Dhawan and Bhanuka Rajapaksa then took on the responsibility to provide a stable base for the batters to follow.
They kept rotating the strike until the 12th over. Post that, Dhawan started scoring big and reached his half-century with a four in the 14th over of the game. Rajapaksa (42), in the meantime, was supporting him well but lost his wicket in the 18th over. Dwane Bravo got his wicket for a team score of 147.
The Dhawan-Rajapaksa duo added 110 runs for the second wicket partnership. Liam Livingstone then walked to the middle and scored some quick runs.
He added 19 runs in seven balls before he fell to Bravo in the final over. Punjab scored 187 -4 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Dhawan scored 88 runs in 59 balls to remain unbeaten. In his innings, he hit nine fours and two sixes.
In the second innings, Chennai also had a slow start. Ruturaj Gaikwad hit a couple of good shots in the first over but Robin Uthappa (one) could not stay at the crease for long. He was dismissed by Sandeep Sharma in the second over. Arshdeep Singh bowled Mitchell Santner (nine) in the sixth over, leaving Chennai at 32-2. Rishi Dhawan then struck Shivam Dube (eight) in the seventh over of the innings After seven overs, Chennai's score was 40/3.
Ambati Rayudu joined Gaikwad and the two scored some important runs in the chase. They added 49 runs together before Gaikwad was dismissed in the 13th over by Kagiso Rabada. Rayudu began to attack and surpassed fifty with a six in the 15th over. Chennai needed 70 in the last five overs to win the game. Rayudu then targeted Sandeep Sharma and blasted three sixes and a four to bring Chennai back in the game, with a win 47 runs away.
Arshdeep bowled the 17th over and conceded just six in the over. Rabada followed it up with another good over as he picked the important wicket of Rayudu and gave just six runs. Rayudu scored 78 runs in 39 balls, with seven fours and six sixes.
Arshdeep bowled the 19th over to Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni, allowing only eight runs. Chennai needed 27 off the final over. Rishi Dhawan conceded a six on the first ball to Dhoni (12) but got his wicket on the third ball. Jadeja hit another six in the over but it wasn't enough as Punjab went on to win the game by 11 runs. This was Punjab's fourth win in eight games. Meanwhile, Chennai lost their sixth match in eight outings.
