Lucknow convincingly beat Punjab by 20 runs in the 42nd match of the Indian T20 League 2022. Punjab's batting lineup faltered while chasing a modest total of 154. Lucknow won their sixth game of the season to move to third place in the points table.
Mayank Agarwal won the toss and decided to field first. Lucknow was looking to settle on the crease in the first innings, as KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock had a slow start. Rahul (six), however, could not last long as he gave his wicket to Kagiso Rabada in the third over. Post that, De Kock and Deepak Hooda took the responsibility to take the team to a good total. They took their time and kept the scoreboard ticking. They only looked to attack after the 12th over, but that did not work well for them.
De Kock (46) and Hooda (34) both lost wickets in quick succession, reducing Lucknow to 104/3 in 13.3 overs. The batting lineup then collapsed and Lucknow could only manage 153 runs in the first innings. Rabada completed his four-wicket haul, and Rahul Chahar took two wickets. Sandeep Sharam took a single wicket in the game.
Punjab tried a similar strategy of starting slowly in the chase, but it did not work for them either. Mayank Agarwal (25) was the first player to depart for the men in red. Dushmantha Chameera got his wicket in the fifth over. Punjab's batting lineup saw a downfall after that. They kept losing wickets and could not sustain partnerships. Jonny Bairstow (32) and Liam Livingstone (18) had a 30-run partnership, but that was never enough.
With Bairstow's wicket in the 16th over and a score of 103/6, all of Punjab's recognised batters were sent back. Rishi Dhawan (21), along with other tailenders, tried his best but could not take the team through. In the end, Lucknow won the match by 20 runs. Mohsin Khan took three wickets, Chameera and Pandya each got two wickets each, while Bishnoi took one in the game.
