Chennai went head-on with Hyderabad in the 46th match of the Indian T20 League 2022. Kane Williamson won the toss and decided to bowl first at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway gave the men in yellow a perfect start. They were knocking the bowlers all across the stadium and had defined roles. Gaikwad was attacking and Conway was giving him support.

The duo raced to their half-centuries in the game. Conway tried to increase his strike rate post his fifty. Meanwhile, Gaikwad, playing at his home ground was dismissed on 99 runs by T Natarajan in the 18th over. The duo accounted for the highest partnership of the season, 182. MS Dhoni (eight) walked in at number three, but he could not add much to the score. Conway, on the other hand, stayed not out on 84 runs in 55 balls to take Chennai to 202 in the first innings.

Hyderabad now needed a quick start to chase the huge target, which they were able to achieve in the powerplay. However, they lost two wickets in the process. Mukesh Choudhary struck the in-form batters Abhishek Sharma (39) and Rahul Tripathi in the sixth over (zero). They struggled to get big partnerships going throughout the chase, which cost them the match. By the 15th over, the score was 126, and they had lost two more set batters, Aiden Markram (17) and Kane Williamson (47).

The equation was not 56 runs in the final three overs. Mukesh Choudhary bowled the over and conceded just six runs. He, however, took two more wickets to complete his four-wicket haul. Dwayne Pretorious did well in the next over to give away just 12 runs. It was all dusted for Hyderabad with 38 runs needed in the last over. Nicholas Pooran (64) hit 24 runs in the final over to complete his half-century. In the end, Chennai beat Hyderabad by 13 runs to keep their hopes for playoffs alive.
