The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai hosted the 47th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 between Rajasthan and Kolkata. Shreyas Iyer won the toss and decided to bowl first. Rajasthan did not have the best start with the bat as they lost Devdutt Padikkal (two) early on. Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson guided Rajasthan to a slow powerplay with just 38 runs in it. Post that, Rajasthan could not get their innings going smoothly, as they lost wickets regularly.
Buttler (22) and Karun Nair (13) departed for a score of 90 by the14th over. Samson, however, stayed at the crease playing a cautious game. He then reached his steady half-century in the 14th over. Kolkata then got successive wickets in the 16th and the 17th over. Riyan Parag (19) and Sanju Samson (54) were out for a score of 115 in 17.1 overs. Shimron Hetmyer (27), with Ravichandran Ashwin (six) on the other end, played a perfect cameo.
Kolkata conceded 30 runs in the last two overs, and Rajasthan managed 152 runs in the first innings. In the chase, Kolkata changed their opening pair in their fifth consecutive game. Aaron Finch and Baba Indrajith opened the innings together, but their tactic did not succeed. Both openers fell within the powerplay for a score of 32. Shreyas Iyer and Nitish Rana were now in the middle and were looking solid.
The duo stuck around for a while and added 60 runs to the third wicket partnership. Trent Boult finally broke the partnership, dismissing Iyer (34) in the 13th over. Rinku Singh joined Rana in the middle, and played some excellent strokes to keep the run rate intact. With 46 runs needed in five overs, the Rana-Rinku duo was confident of chasing it down.
Kuldeep Sen bowled the 17th over, allowing only seven runs. Kolkata scored 21 runs in the following two overs, bowled by Prasidh Krishna and Yuzvendra Chahal. Nitish Rana hit the winning six to conclude the match with five balls to spare. Kolkata beat Rajasthan by seven wickets to win their first game after five straight losses.
